The Intensive Care Nephrology – Beyond BASIC course

The Intensive Care Nephrology – Beyond BASIC course was held in Holiday Inn Hotel Johor Bahru from 8 to 9 May 2025. The course was jointly organized by the Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, Sultanah Aminah Hospital and the Malaysian Society of Intensive Care, in cooperation with the BASIC Collaboration and European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, supported by an education grant from Baxter Healthcare.

The two-day course which was attended by 19 participants comprising of mainly Anaesthesiologists, covered a wide range of topics pertinent to Nephrology in Intensive Care. It included lectures on acute and chronic kidney disease, applied renal physiology, sepsis and acute kidney injury, intra-abdominal hypertension, rhabdomyolysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, intermittent techniques and drug dosing in renal failure. Pre-course reading material was distributed well in advance to participants, followed by two days of lectures, skill stations and tutorials given by a group of dedicated lecturers from all over the country and a guest lecturer from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The course concluded with a post course test in which all participants successfully passed the test.

Overall, the feedback from the participants were positive with all of them recommending the course for specialists and advanced trainees working in critical care settings.
